Well Happy Birthday to
bend_gules, Caroline and ME! The Roman dinner party seems to have gone off well. Sadly we where down one as Anne was down with the flu, get well soon Anne, but the seven of us seemed ready to challenge the food I cooked and as usual I had cooked enough to sink a ship! ;-)
frrsawyer will attest that I was worried there wouldn't be enough food at 11am this morning. One of these days I will believe there is enough to eat! Even by Roman standards we could have fed many more.....
Now the final menu ended up slightly different to plans due to availability of goods at the supermarket and my inability to buy sesame seeds but I was still happy enough with it. Some stuff was authenic and some was stuff I could justify. The peanuts where just there because I like them.... ;-0
Final Menu was
Antipasta including ham, salami, olives, sweet cured mackeral, Sardines, Cheeses.

Peanuts.
Dressed Cucumber Salad

Mulsum (Mulled wine to you and me.)
Pressed Chicken Salad

Grilled Squid

Roast Shoulder of Pork with Barley, figs and Must cakes.

Glazed Mushrooms

Vitellian Peas

Athenian Cabbage.
Cabbage, Carrots and Parsnips
Bread (uneaten because everyone was full)
Patina of Pears

Assorted Pastries.

served with a delightful McGuigan Brother's Botritus Desert wine
I love this stuff but only with sweet things.
All of the recipies came from the The Classical Cookbook byAndrew Dalby, Sally Grainger see Amazon link here but with extra stuff like the squid and antipasto invented by my degenerate mind!
Everyone seemed to like the food and said nice things to me which was nice. I even believe them this time because I liked the food. I was particularly impressed with the Pressed Chicken Salad because it stood up and the Lamb's Sweetbreads tasted nice and with the patina of pears because several avowed pear haters liked it. ;-) Its a very adult desert and something I heartily approve of. Watch out for it at a feast near you.
