Well I just finished my fourth Battle of Hastings, being the years 2002-2005, and well it was my best yet. I didn't fight, in fact I haven't fought in the last two. I helped with the horses which earned me free beer on the Saturday Night and a ride on Sunday.

The ride was great. I attempted to chop cabages and apart from a very very unfortunate incident where I hit my horse (to my greatest and lasting shame, horror and dismay) it went ok but lets just say I am not a danger to the brasica population just yet. Spear/javelin throwing was a different matter. Yet again I proved a crack shot and was able to hit the target from left and right hand sides. ;-)

I managed to get Eadwynn up on a horse but after chopping a few cabbages I think Alan's attempt at equal oportunity expired and he put Terafan up on her horse instead. :-( However this did mean she got to go pass her basic combat assessment and fight in her first battle. Not bad for someone who never picked up a metal weapon before.....

I also got to hack around on the battle field which was cool and unlike last year I even managed to drill with the other horses pretty well. Trotting down hill still makes be nervous though so I better do some practise if I want to stand a chance of riding next year.

In the battle I helped out on foot as did Terafan after he unfortunately had a health issue and my semi-compatriot Tim got to ride in his stead.

Kicking myself really because I have a sneaking suspicision that if I hadn't drop the sword on the horse I would probably have got onto the battle field instead of Tim but then probably not. Oh well must tell myself not to dwell on this, even if I do still occassionally find myself reliving the moment went the sword left my hand and careered towards poor Peron. :-O :-(

An exhausting weekend for sure but a good one and the reports of the look on Eadwynnes[1] face when she came off the battle field makes it definately worthwhile.

Apparently there are some excellent pictures of me spearing shields and some of the battle so I will put them up when I can.

[1] No I haven't had a typo here just declined the Old English Noun in Old English rather than modern English. ;-)
